Every day on Facebook alone, there are dozens of posts telling us about a lost dog. For many of us, the loss of our companion is heartbreaking.
Second Chance of Orangeburg Animal Rescue would like to share some tips on finding your lost dog. We hope these tips will help reunite the family. Everyone should keep up to date pictures of their companions. Every pet should be microchipped. In a safe place keep updated photos of all pets, their tag numbers, their microchip numbers, and collar details. On social media there are many lost and found pet sites post your pet everywhere along with your contact information.
1. Contact your local county and city Animal Control. Send them pictures and descriptions of your lost pets.
2. Contact all local law enforcement in the area police, sheriff and highway patrol.
3. Contact all local pet rescues in the area.
A pet can be lost at home or away from home in an unfamiliar area. You are going to want to assess the situation. Was you pet frightened by something, just looking for an adventure or see something interesting and take off to explore a new playmate? Are there places or people nearby your pet would want to visit? Are there dangers nearby, places your pet could get stuck or in trouble? How far do you think your pet could have traveled and how long do you think it would take for them to get there?

Search your immediate surroundings and broaden your search.
Keep calling your dogs name.
Ask others for help, local rescues etc.
Make sure one person stays home.
Keep the door open.
Dogs follow scents for miles lure them home with favorite toys and unwashed clothes.
Retrace you path. Your companion might not have been there the first time but picked up your scent and is their now.
Have pictures ready and ask people if they have seen your dog.
Alert all social media avenues

Many areas have search and rescue organizations that have trained dogs able to search for other dogs. They are very successful in finding lost dogs in the Midlands of South Carolina Black River Search and Rescue is one of those organizations.
